This one is about losing a brother, and we did lose one and things haven’t been the same since, 10 years on. It’s always been one of my favorites to play live...it reminds me of who I’m answerable to in this work. Anthony’s Gates was the name of like a gate or construction company or something. John and I saw it on the side of a truck and stole it for the song which we wrote later that day. In the demos, we tried to go for this Pogues kinda feel, which there’s a touch of on this version, but in the end opted for a mellower, piano-driven version for “My Son’s Home.” I’m not sure we ever really landed on the right version of this song. Also recorded by Schlett at Hypersnakes, and has Andrew Soto on drums. Andrew, during his brief time in the band, helped us learn how to be loud, fierce, and tighten up rhythmically. You can hear some of that push coming through on this version.
