John and I wrote the music and lyrics to this one during an intensely productive time leading up to recording “My Son’s Home.” We worked long hours and recorded a ton of demos on my 4 track, improvising and riffing off each other, each of us with some notes scribbled, trying to find the right line. Kind of like that game Telephone. This song was partly inspired by the beautiful rascals, bums, and princes who populate John Steinbeck’s little books about Monterey, partly inspired by “The Big Rock Candy Mountain” too.
